IBC '98 was once more proof that IT is on the rise in television production and distribution, due to its ever-increasing performance and falling prices. It is finding more and more use, not only in administrative data processing but also in the domain of classical video technology – recording, editing, distribution and archiving of sound and images. Non-linear editing systems already are in widespread use, television commercials are most often aired from a diskbased playout server; and the manufacturers of automated tape cassette systems see their robotic storage devices at the core of future television archives.
